Novel Review: MacRieve by Kresley Cole

It’s probably been a year since I’ve read any books for personal pleasure. It’s odd. Reading had been such a large part of my life, I almost feel a since of wrongness by not doing it. A little straight talk before the review.

I officially log 2013 as the worst year of my life. I spent pretty much the first half of the year depressed and in tears. It’s amazing how depression can sap the motivation right out of a person. Though no longer depressed, I spent most of the last half of 2013 recuperating from the first half and trying to get my feet under solid ground.

And here we are today. I only mist a little when I talk about the first half of 2013. I love what the future holds. Lately, I’ve been reintroducing the things I enjoyed in the past into my life. I smile and laugh spontaneously. And now… I’m reading again.

Since I’ve been out of the book world so long, I didn’t want to ruin the experience by choosing just any book. So, I went with my favorite author… Kresley Cole. And, I tell you… she didn’t disappoint.

I picked up MacRieve last week and finished it this morning. So my thoughts.

This story didn’t progress The Ascension along as much as I’d hoped. In fact, I can’t say it did anything for the big picture. Well, I learned of a couple behind the scenes deaths… or maybe it was one. We get a bit of a cliff hanger of a major player from Torture Island. Other than that… nothing really to progress the overall plot.

As for the romance (Chloe & Will), there wasn’t anything unique or special about it. Nothing to stand out. It was Kresley Cole’s basic, guy finds life mate and screws things up royally with her. He treats her like trash because of his past but won’t give her up. Then he has to find a way to win her over again. Same old, same old. 🙂

The sex seemed a bit different. It was more like something I’d imagine in a porn movie. Spankings, dirty words, and rough.

So if nothing is unique about this book, why did I like it? Well, it wasn’t bad… just not overly special. I think I liked it so much because I’ve been out of the book world for so long. It’s like watching horror movies to the point that nothing phases you. Then going on a horror movies sabbatical for a few years, only to cringing at everything. I think that’s where I am.

So I’ll give this book 3.5 stars. It’s definitely not my favorite. However, it was well written and enjoyable.

On another note. I told my husband I wanted another book. He said, “Maybe you should savor books rather than reading it all in one sitting.” What gives?

Sunday Showcase #17

Well I got nothing this week. Not one single book. That’s a good thing and a bad thing. You see… my to read shelf is overflowed. I’ve really got to chip away at this. As long as I have no new books to boast about, I feature a series. Today, we have Immortals after Dark (IAD) by Kresley Cole. After 11 stories, this series still captures my attention. So much so, she’s the only author still on my preorder list. I’m not saying all her books are 5 stars, but I will say she’ll never let you down. I’ve ready EVERY One of her IAD works, and I highly suggest you get started, TODAY.

I didn’t start reviewing until I’d hit her second anthology, so you won’t find review links until later. 🙂 I hope you enjoy Immortals after Dark as much as I have.

Novel Review: Dreams of a Dark Warrior by Kresley Cole

Kresley Cole‘s Immortals after Dark (IAD) is one of those auto-buy series. And like a loyal fan, I pre-ordered Dreams of a Dark Warrior (book 11). One of the things which continues to impress me with Ms. Cole is she’s managed to keep the story line fresh even after 10 novels. That being the case, I’m always a little scared going into her next book. How long can she keep it up? Well, before we find out, how about a little blurb from her website:

He vowed he’d come for her. . .

Murdered before he could wed Regin the Radiant, warlord Aidan the Fierce seeks his beloved through eternity, reborn again and again into new identities, yet with no memory of his past lives—only an endless yearning.

She awaits his return. . .

When Regin encounters Declan Chase, a brutal Celtic soldier, she recognizes her proud warlord reincarnated. But Declan takes her captive, intending retribution against all immortals, unaware that he belongs to their world.

To sate a desire more powerful than death. . .

Yet every reincarnation comes with a price, for Aidan is doomed to die when he remembers his past. To save herself from Declan’s torments, will Regin rekindle memories of the passion they once shared—even if it means once again losing the only man she could ever love?

So here we are… book 11. Let’s just cut to the chase. After reading Dreams of a Dark Warrior, I turned to my husband and said, “Kresley Cole is my favorite author.” Yep… that’s right, I’ve graduated Ms. Cole from one of my favorite authors to my favorite author. I’m not going to lie and say this is the absolutely best book I’ve read. However, Ms. Cole continues to remain consistent with putting out quality work. The woman just knows what she’s doing. I <3 her!

The characters: We’ve got Regin the Radiant. She’s your typical bad ass Valkyrie. She doesn’t get in much fighting time, but her mouth is as wicked as ever. 🙂 One of the things I love about this particular love line is the Valkyrie isn’t in denial about her feelings. She recognizes she has them, but doesn’t want them because of the consequence that go with giving in to her feelings. Then we have Declan. I have to say he’s the most tormented character I’ve yet to encounter in the IAD series. He’s like a very tame version of Zsadist from JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. He’s undeserving of love, and even if he did deserve it, he wouldn’t want it from some crummy old Valkyrie. 🙂

As for the plot, this one overlaps with several other novels in the series. I’ve noticed Ms. Cole doing a lot of that lately. I’m so freakin’ excited. It makes me think we’re leading up to a grand finale. Did she know where the story was going way back when she wrote A Hunger Like No Other? Damn it! whose story is next?!!? Lothaire? Nix? Please put me out of my misery. Regin and Declan’s story. I have to admit, I predicted how it would resolve early in the novel, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying the book anyway.

Favorite lines:

  • “Squirrel!”
  • “Time for you to die, Chase.” [Brings back memories of Everquest “Time to die, a skeleton!”]
  • “Everyone makes a bad day trade now and again…”

So once again, I highly recommend the IAD series. Not just Dreams of a Dark Warrior but ALL OF THEM. If you’re looking for a series that’s not going to disappoint, this is it!

The Pile Up

It seems like forever since I’ve done my last mailbox post. Like a good girl, I’ve slowed down on purchases. Yay me! The first two books I believe I preordered, so even that’s kind of good, right? So, let’s see what goodies we have. 🙂

Like I said, this was a preorder. Nalini Singh’s Psi/Changeling series used to be on my instant buy list. Then came the Guild Hunter, which turned into an instant buy also. Only the third in the series, I’m hoping for a winner here. Hopefully her next Guild Hunter book will be an auto-purchase also. But we’ll see.

Next up, Dreams of a Dark Warrior. Kresley Cole has NEVER let me down, and I’m hoping for greatness with this work also. I’m in the middle of Meljean Brook’s Iron Duke, but this book is definitely next. Kresley Cole is one of those authors who currently has a place at the top of my to-read list no matter what’s on my plate. Yes, she’s that good, and I highly recommend her. I’m such a pessimist and keep expecting her to blow it, but she continues to draw me in with each story. Way to go, Ms. Cole!

This round I also received a couple of complimentary copies from authors. Woot!

Last month I read Space Junque (review here). It was my first space opera, and I rather enjoyed it. I was pretty lucky Ms. Rigel offered her next novella to me. I had quite a few questions after the first novella and knew Space Junque was only the tip of the iceberg. Beautiful artwork, don’t you think?

It’s been forever since I’d read a thriller. I used to be really into them, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Peter Straub… then the I started having nightmares. When I read the blurb for Reunion it really drew me, in a sick twisted, I’m asking for trouble kind of way. 🙂 Reunion doesn’t release until May 1, so hopefully I’ll have time to build up my courage. Wish me pleasant dreams. Yikes!
